FDA Takes Second Look At Lasik Surgery

Laser eye surgery, known as Lasik, has helped millions of people see clearly, without wearing contacts or glasses. But now US health regulators are investigating whether the surgery is actually living up to its claims. Lasik uses lasers to carve the clear part of the eye so that you can see better. It costs anywhere from $500 to $2,500 per eye, and many vision insurance plans don't cover it because it's considered cosmetic. A decade after its debut, the Food and Drug Administration wants a second look. The FDA is taking a closer look at Lasik, specifically whether the vision correcting procedure improves patients' lives. For some patients, it does. "They get off the table and say, 'Wow,' especially people who cannot see the clock in the morning across the room," Dr. Laura Pallan, an ophtalmologist with Eger Eye group, said.

Revolutionary New Technique Uses Onyx to Fill Hard-To-Treat Aneurysms

It has been quite a week for aneurysm patient Diane Long, of Homewood, Illinois. On Wednesday she was back home and feeling like she had a new lease on life.

Phillies Notebook: For Benson, new deal sets new timeline with Phillies

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Despite Kris Benson's current bout with soreness in his surgically repaired right arm, the Phillies still believe he will be in a position to help the team sometime in May.

The team has finalized a new contract with the potential starter, sources said, increasing the minor league salary he will receive as well as creating a new date on which he can opt out of his contract.

If Benson isn't on the major league roster and pitches in more than 10 minor league innings before May 15, he can opt out of the deal. Otherwise, he can opt out if he isn't added to the big league roster by June 1.

Benson's original contract contained a clause that enabled him to opt out if he wasn't added to the big league roster by March 25. But recent shoulder soreness has set back his progression.

Military working dog Rex recovering from recent eye surgery

Former U.S. Air Force military working dog Rex is recovering very quickly from eye surgery he received March 13 to replace non-functioning tear ducts in his eyes. Rex was featured in The Era at the end of February seeking help to get him the vital eye surgery that his owner, former Air Force Tech Sgt. Jamie Himes Mangan, could not afford on her own.

The next day, an anonymous donor contacted Mangan and provided the full amount for the surgery, which was in the vicinity of $2,000. Two weeks later, Rex got his surgery at Animal Eye Care of Western New York and took just a couple of days to recover."He had to wear one of those protective collars around his neck so that he wouldn’t rub at his eyes and he was pretty sore the night of the surgery," said Mangan. "Other than that though, he has recovered quickly and his eyes are producing tears again so it’s great."Rex’s tear glands stopped producing tears about a year ago and after trying every other possible route, Mangan concluded the only option was to get the surgery. To replace the tear glands, a surgeon had to locate one salivary gland from each side of Rex’s mouth and re-route it to his eyes.
