American League team previews

Hot spots: Center field and fifth starter. The competition between veteran Coco Crisp and rookie Jacoby Ellsbury fizzled when Crisp missed all but two Florida exhibition games with a groin injury. Curt Schilling's shoulder injury that will sideline him at least until the All-Star break and Josh Beckett's back injury caused the Red Sox to sign free-agent Bartolo Colon, a major health risk himself.

Bottom line: The World Series winners two of the last four seasons stood pat and have several key young players who gained experience. Two of them, Jon Lester and Ellsbury, made major contributions in the playoffs. Dustin Pedroia, a fiery competitor who toned down some of his personality as a rookie, is more vocal now and a spark plug in the dugout. If the starting pitching holds up, the Red Sox have a great chance to repeat.

After five years of designing, making and selling her elegant jewelry primarily to Kentuckiana customers, Cindy Borders is taking her precious stones and metals on the road.

Already well-known around here for donating thousands of dollars worth of jewelry to good causes, she intends to make herself a household name through retailers from the Virgin Islands to Venice Beach. All that glitters Borders, a former dentist, began making jewelry in 2002 after a friend introduced her to a gemologist who was visiting from India. Intrigued by his array of precious stones and metals, she started designing her own glittering creations.

"It was scary at first because of the big investment involved," she said.

New surgery in Houston for critically injured Emilio

HOUSTON (AP) - Grammy-winning singer Emilio Navaira has undergone more brain surgery in Houston as doctors try to save his life.

Navaira was driving his tour bus and was thrown through the windshield when the vehicle crashed early Sunday.

Physicians took the 45-year-old Navaira, known to his Tejano fans simply as Emilio, back to the operating room last night for nearly two hours of surgery.

A doctor reopened an incision from Navaira's initial surgery and removed some bone that had been taken out, then put back following the first operation to remove a blood clot.

That gave the brain some room to expand. The wreck, which remains under investigation, left several members of Navaira's band with less serious injuries.

Raul Navaira, who has a black eye from the wreck, today said: "I have faith" and he thanked everyone who's praying for his brother.

Fort Erie surgeon says health system needs to make better use of small hospitals

Taking operating-room nurses and equipment from Fort Erie to solve problems at Greater Niagara General Hospital may sound like a good idea to some doctors in Niagara Falls.

But to Dr. Patricia Teal, the idea borders on the absurd.

"I mean it's silly to even talk about it," said Teal, an eye surgeon and chief of surgery at Douglas Memorial Hospital. "I mean four nurses are not going to solve Niagara Falls' problem to begin with and these are not the nurses that could do it.

"And the equipment we have - we have almost nothing there that would be of any use to them. We're not in competition (with GNGH). We don't do what they do."

Teal made her comments Thursday - the day after a group of 39 Niagara Falls doctors published an open letter in The Review.

Brewton boy becomes ‘Pilot for a Day'

Garrett Byrd can't fly a plane, but he has been a pilot. Byrd, along with other members of his family, were recently treated to the "Pilot for a Day" program at Naval Air Station Whiting Field near Milton, Fla.

Children with chronic or serious illnesses who are patients at Sacred Heart Hospital's pediatric unit are chosen to participate in the program.

"It was a lot of fun," Garrett said. "I got to do a lot of interesting things. I watched a lot of planes take off and land."

A visit to one of the flight simulators was Garrett's favorite part of the day, he said.

"It was really fun," Garrett said. "They controlled the simulator with PlayStation controllers."

Garrett made the trip with his mother, Maggie, his father, Ken, and sisters Lauren and Sarah Katherine.
